CME Certification in the State of Florida
Background and History
The FMA is recognized by the Accreditation
Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to accredit Florida
organizations seeking to provide physician continuing medical education
(CME) activities designated for AMA category 1 credit. The FMA has
appointed a Committee on Accreditation to oversee the intra-state
accreditation process in Florida.
Approximately 10 years ago, the FMA Committee on Accreditation
determined that CME professionals working for FMA-accredited providers
needed continuing education and training in order to fulfill the
responsibilities of their roles as CME planners and administrators.
The CME Certification Examination
The examination is developed and administered by the Florida Medical
Association. Questions are based on the FMA accreditation guidelines
including the Essential Areas and Their Elements and the FMA Policies
& Procedures for Intra-State Accreditation. The FMA has adopted the
ACCME accreditation system, the AMA's guiding principles for AMA category
1 CME credit, and various other policies and procedures deemed necessary
by the Committee on Accreditation.
Once the examination is passed successfully (at least 70%), the
certification is good for two years. Subsequent certification
requires the passage of another certification examination.
